Katherine Verdery

Katherine Verdery completed graduate studies in anthropology and earned her Ph.D. at Stanford University (California). She was professor at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore (Maryland) as well as the University of Michigan, where she was head of the Center for Russian and East European Studies as well as the Department of Anthropology. She is currently Distinguished Professor at the Anthropology Program at the City University of New York Graduate Center.
She is one of the leading cultural anthropologists of Eastern Europe and Romania with a particularly wide scope of interest: socialism and postsocialist transformation, property, political anthropology, and Secret Police organization.
