Founded in 1543, Leipzig University Library houses today some of the most valuable items of world literary heritage: Papyrus Ebers (the longest and oldest surviving medical manuscript from ancient Egypt, ca. 1600 BC), the world's oldest bible (Codex Sinaiticus, 4th century AD), a giant Mongolian Qur'an, lavishly produced in Bagdad in 1306, and the Machsor Lipsiae, a splendidly adorned Hebrew manuscript from 1320.
These priceless treasures are included in this catalog, along with a choice of other unique manuscripts and prints, ordered by areas of knowledge form 'Botany' through 'America', from 'Astronomy' through 'Judaism'. The catalog features almost 100 high resolution, full-page images.
The exhibition is part of the anniversary celebrations commemorating six centuries of continuous teaching at Leipzig University (1409-2009). Short catalog essays by renowned scholars open up interesting chapters of the history of knowledge as reflected by the library's holdings.
